Desperation by Neko-me Desperation by Neko-me
Sketch Commission for :iconmoppypuppy:

"Twilight Sparkle, you are forbidden from returning home until your performance improves."

"With the return of Nightmare Moon fast approaching, Princess Celestia is forced to accelerate filly Twilight's magic training beyond the capability of any pony, let alone Twilight who is still just a filly.

Filly Twilight's blissful days with caring Celestia effectively end. Celestia becomes harsh and cold, callously berates Twilight for the slightest error, and doesn't acknowledge any success. Twilight's enduring successes only prompt Celestia to accelerate her education further until Twilight's efforts fall short.

Upon Twilight's first failure Celestia forbids Twilight any form of distraction, ripping away her stuffed toy Smarty Pants, and finally forbidding Twilight from visiting her parents."

I saw a comment referring to this picture as unrealistic and unreasonable. I mean, Celestia would never act like that, right? Well, I agree, yet I disagree. In terms of canon, there's no way in Tartarus she would ever act this way toward Twilight, or toward anypony for that matter. She's a kind and understanding ruler, and even with such a pressing issue as the return of Nightmare Moon, Celestia would never be so cruel and harsh towards another, ESPECIALLY Twilight. However, the fictional world of Equestria as bronies see it is different. We see it as an imperfect place; a false utopia ripe for exploring through fanfiction and art. We have different interpretations of how things could and would happen in Equestria, and we tend to add a darker tone to some things. This is an example of that darker tone. Was this what Twilight was going through during her advanced studies with Celestia? Did she just repress these memories? If we weren't shown this portion of Twilight's apprenticeship, what else could the solar princess be guilty of that we are not aware of? It's all headcanon for the brony community, and is a fun distraction from the normally bright, happy, and perfect land of Equestria. With that rant out of the way, what do I think about the picture? Well, I think it's decent. There doesn't appear to be any noticeable mistakes (other than the F's looking like 7's or trees) and they definitely nailed the jarringly dark reality of this scenario. It depresses me just looking at it. My biggest gripe, however, would be with the background. There's just something about it that stands out, and not in a good way. It feels like it doesn't belong. I'm not sure if it's the color, the texture, or something else entirely, but I just don't like the background here. Other than that, it's a decent picture.

I look at this art and I have come to a realization. Two realizations, in fact, but both very different. First, in my heart, I know how Twilight is feeling in this picture. What she is feeling is the unbearable feeling of failure, and that she must do everything and anything in her nature and abilities to try to please her mentor. My other realization is that I know by experience that Twi must try harder, lest her mentor snaps back at her. I know, even now, that in our toughest moments in our short lives, that we all must try hard.

Sunset Shimmer was supposed to defeat Nightmare Moon right on schedule. That failed.
Twilight Sparkle fills that slot, but now there's little time left, training is accelerated.

Why? Like always for the good of all Equestria.

And therefore Tiny Twi must be prepared and stronger willed. Training has been accelerated.
